Light without electricity? The GravityLight

It seems to be luxury by turning on the lights with a wink of switch. But for the third of world's population that lives without electricity, something as simple for getting light can be a costly challenge.
To relieve people from such challenge, here comes GravityLight- a simple device that generates light without availability of electricity.
The device doesn't require any battery, fuel or mechanical effort to generate light. Instead, you hang the device on a wall and attach a heavy material, such as rock or dirt. Then you simple lift the bag and let it go.

There are a series of gears and a rough belt inside the device. When the weight is attached to it, it slowly pulls the belt through a series of gears to drive a small motor, which powers an LED. The LED can glow for about 30 minutes. GravityLight can also be used to generate power for low-voltage devices like radios or batteries.

In many areas where source of power is not electricity, they fulfill their need by burning out fueled lamps which produce harmful fumes and may cause severe burns if not handled with care. But this light doesn't have any negative impact on users' health as well as on environment.

GravityLight is proven to be very helpful for the struggling families who can't afford fuel for their source of light. At a cost of only $10, the Gravitylight would pay for itself in a few months.

Created by Martin Riddiford and Jim Reeves, GravityLight was inspired by a challenge by SolarAid, a charity that asked inventors to come up with an LED light to replace kerosene lanterns.

Riddiford and Reeves believe the lamp is just the beginning of what they’ll be able to accomplish with this simple, low-level power. It’s all part of their mission to do more with less.
